Korea urged to prioritize hydrogen, smart cities for NEOM development

Experts advise Seoul to shift from passivity and embrace bold initiatives

Korea should prioritize hydrogen and smart city initiatives to enhance its influence on NEOM, a pioneering city being built in Saudi Arabia by leading companies from around the world with the goal of maximizing efficiency and eco-friendliness for the anticipated 9 million residents, according to government officials and experts, Tuesday.

As the oil-rich kingdom seeks to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energies to address the climate crisis and align with global initiatives on carbon neutrality, Seoul should capitalize on Saudi Arabia's needs by showcasing Korea's capabilities, particularly in the world's largest city construction project, the experts said.

What is a smart city? How many such cities have been built in India so far?

Even the government does not have the answer to the question of: what is a smart city. In June 2015, a ‘Mission Statement and Guidelines’ were issued for this mission. In this document, it is said that there is no universal definition of ‘smart city’. According to the document, “The definition of a smart city is different for every person. So its meaning changes from city to city.”

However, the very next paragraph talks about building ‘developmental’ infrastructure for cities and providing excellent services. According to the document, the entire urban eco-system should be developed in such a way that it is in line with parameters of institutional, physical, social and economic infrastructure. In a sense, push for holistic development.

When a large vehicle approaches, the system checks its weight and produces an early warning if the vehicle and its load is heavier than the bridge was designed to support. The vehicle is then immediately intercepted from crossing the bridge as an emergency response. The screen of the monitor platform shows a digital twin replica of the bridge.

How Will AI Shape Our Future Cities?

From Zurich to Boston and Shanghai, more and more places are using “digital twins” to create a virtual version of the city to plan the urban experiences of tomorrow. But a lack of data means there’s still a gap between our visions and reality, which Swiss researchers are working on closing.

For city planners, a bird’s-eye view of a map showing buildings and streets is no longer enough. They need to simulate changes to bus routes or traffic light timings before implementation to know how they might affect the population. Now, they can do so with digital twins – often referred to as a “mirror world” – which allows them to simulate scenarios more safely and cost-effectively through a three-dimensional virtual replica.

When a concept is presented as the magic answer to a problem, it tends to inspire skepticism and distrust. Smart City: Shaping a Sustainable Urban Future

Imagine a city that breathes—not with the smog of a thousand cars, but with the clean air of rooftop gardens and electric buses gliding silently through tree-lined streets. A city where energy flows not from distant fossil fuels, but from the sun dancing on its buildings and the wind whispering through its turbines.

A city where waste is not a burden, but a resource, transformed into new life through composting and recycling. This is the vision of the smart city, a metropolis not just of steel and glass, but of innovation and sustainability.

The idea was mooted by Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Alikhan last week (February 2) at the plenary session of the Digital Almaty 2024 Forum. The Indian Envoy to Kazakhstan also addressed the Forum.

The Dubai Public Prosecution is the first government entity in Dubai that has made its electronic applications available on the Apple Store.

The Public Prosecution Information System Department director Hind al Zarooni recently gave an update on the department’s progress in line with the guidelines of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to start implementing the smart government.

He said the department had so far made 83 e-services available to the public.

“We had put in use the UAE Law application and continued to put other applications to serve the public. There is also our own store which is similar to the Apple Store and contains special prosecution applications which our members can upload on their smart phones.”

Al Zarooni made an elaborated presentation in a meeting attended by the Dubai Attorney-General Eissam Issa Al Humaidan, on the applications and services made available to the customers on iPads and smart phones in the last three years.

In the meeting, Al Humaidan adopted the Public Prosecution’s future vision which would seek to upgrade the department’s electronic smart applications.

The Public Prosecution’s future vision would focus on more services for lawyers in addition to comprehensive and upgraded smart applications that would target all the customers.

“The applications have served three types of smart phone users. First, the public, second, the prosecution members and the judges and third, the parties concerned in cases,” Al Zarooni said during the presentation.

The applications include the UAE Laws and the Principles software which are both available on the IPhone and IPad. Other applications include ‘A crime and a lesson’, ‘Legal education’, and the ‘Electronic Legal Dubai Magazine’, which are all available for the public.

As many as 83 electronic services have been offered to the public which feature the option to inquire about the cases and the hearing dates, filing requests for bail, passport claim and claim request for other seized items.
