In September, officials from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), armed with fingerprinting machines, iris scanners and cameras hooked to laptops, will fan out across the towns and villages of southern Andhra Pradesh state in the first phase of the project whose aim is to give every Indian a lifelong Unique ID (UID) number.
Talking to Kerala IT News, Ajith Brahmanandan, Technical Director, NIC said, “Even though September 1st was a festival holiday, we kept our commitment and completed the roll out. The response has been overwhelming and that’s an indication to the success of the project. We are getting an average of about 40 applications online everyday.” As on today, 865 online applications have been received through the Akhaya Centres in Trivandrum District alone and 212 applications directly through the Civil Supplies Department website.

Employers will file the DE 9 quarterly to report their personal income tax withholding, unemployment insurance, employment training tax, and state disability insurance contributions instead of reporting these items annually on the Annual Reconciliation Statement (DE 7). Detailed wage items for each worker will be reported on the DE 9C instead of the Quarterly Wage and Withholding Report (DE 6). Employers will still use the DE 6 and DE 7 for years prior to 2011.
The newly introduced service is interactive and facilitates communication between the user and the authority; and also allows the flow of comments and suggestions to the authority. In order to be able to enjoy these services, the user would need to download the corresponding iPhone application from the apps store on the website.
As part of the E-Government project initiated to provide government services with the most advanced technology, the internet portal consists of important information from government agencies.
While more than 300 forms of different government agencies can be downloaded from “egov.mv,” accessible in both English and local Dhivehi language, it contains information on service hours, important contact information of agencies and senior government officials and NGO listings.
At a micro level, this ranged from IT automation in individual departments, electronic file handling and access to entitlements, public grievance systems, service delivery for high volume routine transactions such as payment of bills and tax dues to meeting poverty alleviation goals through the promotion of entrepreneurial models and provision of market information.
The training, when put to use for the 2011 elections, according to knowledgeable police sources, will guide against multiple voting and other fraudulent practices.
The police will also establish Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) in every state for use in large scale civil identification projects to prevent multiple enrollments for the electoral system, for drivers licensing and background checks for job applicants for highly sensitive posts.
