Telehealth: For better healthcare facilities in future
Wednesday, 01 September 2010
Telehealth has gained tremendous momentum over the last few years.

Today, over 17.5 million people in the UK are living with a long-term disease. This has led to placing a significant strain on health and social care resources. As per estimations, almost 80% of GP consultations relate to a long-term condition and around 60% of hospital beds are utilized by individuals living with a long-tem condition. Treatment for these people accounts for 69% of the Primary and Acute care budget in England – resulting in a clear economic burden on the NHS. Owing to premature deaths due to heart diseases, strokes and diabetes in the next ten years, the UK economy stands to lose around £16billion.

Wednesday, 01 September 2010
New Zealand continues to outpace on e-health as Australia still grapples with key design, funding and planning issues.

Tom Bowden, chief executive of Auckland-based secure messaging and integration specialist HealthLink, said Australia had failed to do the hard work on building basic capacity, setting standards and improving data quality.

"All the really flash stuff has been worked on and there's been lots of bright ideas, but the real effort is still to be done and we won't see solid progress until that occurs," he said.

Malaysia: MYEG sets record-high quarterly revenue of RM17.1 mln in 4Q10
Wednesday, 01 September 2010
Malaysia’s e-government services provider MY EG Services Bhd (MYEG) kept its healthy pace of growth for the financial year ended June 30, with net profits growing 21.4 per cent to RM20.9 million from RM17.2 million in the previous corresponding year. This was on the back of group revenue growth of 18.3 per cent to RM62.1 million, driven by the group’s introduction of innovative e-government services such as the online renewal for foreign maid permits and higher overall awareness of the group’s e-government services on MYEG’s portal at www.myeg.com.my.

“Group revenues in the fourth quarter were another record high for the group, strongly indicating the increasing acceptance of online e-government transactions amongst the public. UK: NHS Direct - number not service to go
Tuesday, 31 August 2010
NHS Direct hopes that it will continue to be a part of England’s national urgent care service, following the introduction of the 111 non-emergency number.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley told reporters last week that NHS Direct would be replaced with a new 111 number service. But the helpline told EHI Primary Care that news of its demise was premature.

“It’s not the end of the organisation but the end of the [NHS Direct] number,” a spokesperson said when asked to clarify whether the organisation is being scrapped or subsumed within a new set-up.
