Australia: e-Health funding not enough: Victorian Department of Health

$446 million in funding not enough for e-health record trial

The Federal Government's $446 million commitment to e-health is “not enough” and could deliver a "prototype" to sell the benefits of technology and healthcare, according to the Victorian Department of Health.

In the recently released budget papers, the documents for the health portfolio stated the sum would be spent over the next two years to “establish key components of the personally controlled electronic health record system”.

Australia: Minimum of 100 megabits/second needed for e-health, says authority

A telemedicine body says broadband speed of 100 megabits per second is needed in regional areas for locals to get the best health services.

The three rural independents say broadband is one of the big issues for their electorates, as they head into the second week of negotiations with Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard.

Labor plans a fibre network of 100 megabits a second to 93 per cent of households, while the Coalition says it will use a mix of technologies to provide a minimum 12 megabits per second, and up to 100 megabits, to 97 per cent of homes.

USA: Technology connecting CarolinaEast patients with off-site neurologists

Doctors, nurses and staff in CarolinaEast Medical Center’s department of emergency medicine are turning to technology to help fill a gap in their medical staff roster.

Since May, the hospital has contracted with a company called Specialists On Call that connects neurologists with patients using video conferencing technology.

Many of the neurologists who have worked with CarolinaEast patients and staff have been from New Jersey, although they can be located across the country, according to Megan McGarvey, CarolinaEast’s director of public relations.

UID to be ‘number for life’ for Indians: Nilekani

The unique identification number will be a “number for life” for millions of Indians who at present do not have access to public schemes, according to Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Nandan Nilekani.

“The domestic movement within India is slated to escalate due to development and climate change that would drive migration. Due to lack of identity proof, 100 million people are unable to avail of public schemes. It is here that the unique identification number will make a difference as it will be the number for life for them,” Mr. Nilekani said here Friday evening.

UAE: Federal National Council launches ‘e-parliament’

The Secretariat General of the Federal National Council (FNC) has launched an ‘e-parliament’ project, as the UAE becomes the first Arab country to initiate such a system. The project aims at regulating the internal tasks that FNC members and the secretariat’s officers are entrusted with.

Dr Mohamad Salim Al Mazroui, FNC’s Secretary-General, said the Council’s secretariat was going to launch a new set of e-services which would further simplify the procedures for the FNC members, and at the same time ease the functioning of the FNC officials.

Most hospitals waiting for insurers to cover telemedicine costs

For UPMC surgeon Andrew Watson, it was a no-brainer.

It was February 2009, and he had been practicing laparoscopy for 2 1/2 years at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), always meeting his patients in person in his office for pre- or post-operative consultations and checkups.

But fellow surgeon David Faber of Bedford, Bedford County, proposed that Dr. Watson try using telemedicine to meet with some of the patients Dr. Faber referred to him -- some of whom would drive three or more hours from central Pennsylvania to Dr. Watson's Downtown office.

India: Bihar: Modi launches e-payment of VAT

The commercial tax department is observing 2010-11 as e-governance year during which the department will be fully computerized. Under this plan, the department has launched "Mission Mode Project for Computerisation of Commercial Taxes Administration" at a cost of Rs 51.21 crore.

This was announced by deputy CM-cum-finance minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Saturday here at a launching function of "e-payment of VAT" organised by Punjab National Bank. He said under mission mode project, online facility for filing C' and F' forms, registration, tax payment, seeking refund, filing complaint will be made available.

India: Government to shortly ban unsolicited calls, Smses says Sachin Pilot

The government will put a complete curb on unsolicited calls and SMSes to enable close to 68 crores of mobile subscribers breathe a sigh of relief as mobile operators and service providers have been asked to stop this unethical and illegal practice, disclosed Mr. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communications & IT here on Friday.

Inaugurating ASSOCHAM organized 7th National Summit on E-Governance, Mr. Pilot also disclosed that the on-going face-off between government and BlackBerry about intercepting the latter’s services will be resolved in forthcoming meeting between various government agencies and BB functionaries. The solution be such as would empower government to monitor & supervise services of Canadian telecom giant by August 31st. He, however, did not disclose the date for the proposed meeting but committed that on-going deadlock will come to an end.

India: ‘60,000 CSCs set up in the country'

Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar has said that 60,000 common services centres (CSCs) have been set up in the country so far as part of the national e-governance plan. The remaining 40,000 CSCs of the targeted one lakh would come up in a year. The infrastructure for them was being built, he told reporters on the sidelines of inauguration of the Centre for Innovations in Public Systems (CIPS) at the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) here on Saturday.

The CSCs provide services in the areas of e-governance, education, health, telemedicine, entertainment and private matters through cost effective video, voice and data content.

Getting a building permit from the City of Atlanta means navigating a tangled website

To one businessman and City Hall critic, it’s yet another example of the City of Atlanta’s poor customer service.

“When you apply for a new [building] permit, the city website then directs you to search for an existing one,” he says of the city Bureau of Buildings’ process. “I spent about a half-hour clicking, then I ended up somehow finding a page where it says ‘log in.’ You go to log in and it tells you to create a user account, then you can apply for a new permit.” Mission (somewhat) accomplished.
