  • GB: Scotland widens the net

    People and business in remote parts of Scotland without broadband will soon be able to get access, following an extension to a countrywide initiative

    The Scottish Executive has promised to provide affordable broadband to those communities in Scotland without access by the end of 2005, it was announced on 25 April 2005.

  • Österreich: Burgenland will Breitband für alle

    Bis 2006 will das Burgenland als erstes Bundesland den flächendeckenden Breitbandausbau fertig stellen.

    Das Land Burgenland will im kommenden Jahr als erstes Bundesland flächendeckend den Zugang zum Breitband-Internet ermöglichen.

    Das kündigten Staatssekretär Eduard Mainoni [BZÖ] und Landeshauptmann Hans Niessl [SPÖ] am Mittwoch in Eisenstadt an. Bis Jahresende solle die Infrastruktur dazu "in sehr hohem Ausmaß" zur Verfügung stehen, bis Mitte 2006 wolle man bereits den 100-prozentigen Ausbau im Burgenland erreichen, so Niessl.

    Mit seiner 2003 gestarteten Initiative für leistungsfähige Daten-Highways liegt NÖ bereits über Plan. Mehr als 700 der angepeilten 1.000 Standorte im Land sind versorgt.

    “Ende des Jahres werden es 90 Prozent der geplanten Wirtschafts-Standorte sein,” ist LH-Stv. Ernest Gabmann überzeugt. “Mitte nächsten Jahres wird unser Bundesland aus Sicht der Informationstechnologie flächendeckend optimale Rahmenbedingungen bieten,” so der Wirtschaftslanderat.

    The Welsh Assembly is to meet with suppliers before starting its project to extend its broadband infrastructure to tackle the digital divide, it was announced on 14 April 2005.

  • UK:Mobile broadband & computing centre in the Cotswolds to help disadvantaged

    Gloucester College of Art and Technology is touring a mobile broadband and computing centre across the Cotswolds - the aim being to bridge the digital divide and provide ICT training to disadvantaged and rural areas of Gloucestershire.

    Back in 2002, Gloucester College of Art and Technology (GLOSCAT) faced the challenge of improving ICT and Internet skills across the county, as part of the Government’s drive to bridge the digital divide. Operating in a very rural part of the UK, the college looked at how to deliver computing facilities and Internet access to its outlying communities.

    Bundesminister Clement startet Breitbandatlas und Breitbandportal des BMWA

    Das Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit (BMWA) hat heute ein neues Internetportal gestartet, das Bürger und Unternehmen über die technische Funktionsweise, den Nutzen und die Verfügbarkeit von Breitbandtechnologien informieren wird.

    Unter der Adresse www.zukunft-breitband.de erhält der Besucher neben Erklärungen zu allen wichtigen Breitbandtechniken (DSL, Glasfaser, TV-Kabel, Powerline, WLAN/WiMAX, UMTS und Rundfunk-Techniken) auch Informationen zu rechtlichen Zusammenhängen und Sicherheitsaspekten. Zahlreiche praktische Anwendungsbeispiele von Digitalfoto über E-Business bis E-Government machen die Vorteile und Perspektiven von Breitbandtechnologien sichtbar.
