SADC: Southern African Development Community

  • SADC countries increase ICT budgets by 29%

All countries in the SADC region with the exception of one, have increased the ICT budgets by 29% to reflect their growing commitment to e-government.

According to a SADC ICT report released by ForgeAhead, the political will to develop strong ICT communities has manifested itself in the recent increases in the budget allocations.

“On average, there has been a 29% increase in ICT budgets between 2006/07 to 2007/08. In fact, all the countries in the SADC region, to the exception of this year’s host country (Mauritius), have increased their ICT budget to reflect their growing commitment to e-government. The majority of funds originate from donors such as the World Bank,” the report said.

  • SADC Countries: ‘Legislate ICT to fuel growth’

Members and staff of Parliaments from twelve (12) SADC Countries Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and members of the provincial legislators of South Africa, met in Johannesburg, South Africa from the 13th to 15th of February 2007 to discuss strategies of involving Parliaments in building an inclusive information society in the region and making Information and Communications Technology (ICTs) work in Parliaments.

  • SADC Cybersecurity practitioners seek more capacity

The fourth workshop in a global series of workshop on Cybercrime and Cybersecurity to be hosted by the US Government was held in Gaborone recently. The retreat, dubbed the Sub-Saharan African Cybercrime and Cybersecurity workshop attracted mostly security and law agents from almost all the SADC countries who all resolved to have their governments devote more resources to fighting cyber crimes.

Eric Tamrkin, from The Institute for Security Studies said “Given the report that Africa is becoming cybercrime safe harbour, the problem could hamper economic growth, foreign investment and security. Policy makers need a cogent response to cybercrime which is informed by a clear understanding of emerging threats and how other countries have formed strategies in response; countries on the continent should adopt a multi-layered approach”

  • SADC Region: Digital drives healthcare costs down

Digital intervention can be instrumental in both lowering the cost of healthcare and addressing accessibility issues.

So says Valter Adão, leader of Deloitte Digital in Africa and firm-wide healthcare and life sciences industry leader for Deloitte in Southern Africa.

The global mobile health (mHealth) market is predicted to reach $24 billion by 2018, from $4.5 billion in 2013, according to GSMA and PwC's 2012 study, "Touching lives through mobile health assessment of the global market opportunity."

  • Southern African Development Community (SADC) Prepares for Home and Away Service

The delivery of effective and efficient service that meets the universal criteria of accessibility and affordability has the capacity to stimulate development and assist SADC to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), including drastic reduction of poverty in the region.

This view was expressed last Friday by the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Joel Kaapanda, when he officially opened a three-day Southern African Development Community (SADC) conference for ministers responsible for telecommunication and postal, information and communication technology. The conference ended on Friday at Swakopmund.
