1 July 2011 marked the first anniversary of the launch of Denmark's digital signature system NemID. During that year, it was used 310 million times by 79 % of the adult population to access services in both the public and private sectors, and notably for Internet banking.

NemID provides the means for secure digital communication. More than 3.2 million Danes now use it, with over 2.9 million using it for both banking and the public sector. In the future, NemID is expected to facilitate much greater use of self-service in citizens' contacts with the municipalities, regions and State authorities.

Charlotte Sahl-Madsen, Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, said: "NemID has given Danes a digital key to both the public and private sectors, as it is easier to remember and thus use. Meanwhile, security has increased markedly. It's no secret that there were some initial difficulties. Nevertheless NemID has achieved a widespread and frequent use by citizens even in its first year. I am very satisfied with it."

She added: "We have with NemID created a foundation for secure digital communications that can be built upon in future years, when the public sector must continue to be modernised and made more efficient with new digital services for the benefit of the citizens."

According to the financial sector, NemID has also made a significant contribution to the decline of the number of intrusions in Internet banking. The Danish Bankers Association (Finansrådet, in Danish) reported that the number of intrusions fell from 251 in 2008 to 12 in 2010, and since November 2010 there have been none at all.

People of all ages use NemID:

  • Among people in their mid-twenties, the age group which employs NemID the most, it is used by 95 % of men and 98 % of women
  • Among 70-year-olds, 70 % of men and 50 % of women
  • Among 80-year-olds, 40 % of men and 30 % of women
  • Among 16-year-olds, 27 % of both boys and girls.

Danes arrange their Internet bank transactions and other activities most often on weekdays. On a typical Wednesday NemID is used about 1.3 million times, as opposed to 650 000 times on Saturdays and 1 million times on Sundays. The busiest day is always the last day of the month, however, when NemID is used about 3 million times.

For the first six months of 2011, it has been possible to log in with NemID 99.99 % of the time, as it has been down for only 10 minutes.

NemID is developed in cooperation between the banks, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Videnskabsministeriet, in Danish) and a private company.
