In a milestone for the Smart City Infrastructure Fund (SCIF), CiviSmart brings together the three smart lighting operators of Ottima, Selettra and Atlantico.
Italian real-estate and infrastructure investment company Patrizia is launching a smart public lighting platform, bringing together the three previously acquired smart lighting operators of Ottima, Selettra and Atlantico.
It marks a major milestone for Patrizia’s Smart City Infrastructure Fund (SCIF), which has invested significantly in Italian urban infrastructure since 2022. CiviSmart’s expansion is also directly aligned with EU energy transition policies, particularly the European Green Deal and Energy Efficiency Directive.
Smart City Infrastructure Fund
CiviSmart is the culmination of several years of targeted investment by SCIF, which has expanded its footprint in Italy’s smart city sector since 2022. With over 380,000 light points under management across 200 municipalities, CiviSmart is set to play a key role in supporting Italy’s energy transition and urban digitalisation goals.
To lead this next phase of growth, Riccardo Amoroso has been appointed CEO of CiviSmart to drive the company’s expansion and accelerate its deployment of smart city solutions across Italy.
Already a national operator, CiviSmart is expanding beyond smart lighting to offer a full suite of smart city solutions and provides a centralised platform to coordinate initiatives.
In Chioggia, it has deployed smart traffic management, a video analytics network, variable message signs and citywide long range wide area network (LoRaWaN) and fibre optic infrastructure. This supports Internet of Things (IoT) services like environmental monitoring, smart parking and energy metering.
In Venice, CiviSmart manages over 450 public buildings, integrating lighting, energy efficiency and smart monitoring. In Puglia, it is developing 30 Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) with renewable energy, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrades.
“I firmly believe in technology and innovation, which, combined with sustainability, including economic sustainability, represent the true engine of the energy transition,” said Riccardo Amoroso, CEO of CiviSmart. “I found in CiviSmart a reality that reflects these values and a clear vision of the future. I am excited to contribute to this project and bring my experience to support the company’s development in Italy and abroad.
“CiviSmart is the ideal partner for public administrations that want to improve the quality of life of their communities through the adoption of intelligent technologies and sustainable solutions.”
Since 2022, SCIF has made a series of strategic acquisitions in the Italian smart lighting sector, supporting the transformation of public lighting into an enabler of energy efficiency, digital services and urban safety.
Matteo Andreoletti, head of infrastructure equity, Europe and North America at Patrizia, added: “The creation of CiviSmart is a major step forward for our Smart City Infrastructure Fund, reflecting our commitment to building high-quality, scalable urban infrastructure investments.
“Smart public lighting is a crucial enabler of energy transition, and with CiviSmart, we are well-positioned to support municipalities in delivering sustainable, efficient and future-ready cities.”
