Transforming Government since 2001

The basics:

  • LG CNS, Englewood Cliffs sign MOU to pursue smart city goals
  • Partnership includes AI, IoT, digital twins, cybersecurity focus
  • Supports student internships, digital education initiatives
  • Borough aims to become a model for smart city innovation

LG CNS America Inc. and the Borough of Englewood Cliffs – where the electronic giant’s U.S. headquarters is located – have entered into a groundbreaking public-private partnership.

During a July 29 event at LG HQ, the partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a shared framework to explore smart infrastructure, workforce development and student-centered innovation.

It marks the first step in Englewood Cliffs’ commitment to becoming a smart-city ready municipality.

“This MOU signifies a turning point,” said Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mark Park. “With LG CNS as a partner, Englewood Cliffs is not only embracing innovation, but we are also building the foundations of a Smart City and Technology and Innovation District in the East Coast that reflects the values and aspirations of our community.”

“Our vision aligns perfectly with the Borough’s ambition,” said Jun Ho Lee, president of LG CNS America. “Together, we’re creating a blueprint for smart-city innovation, one that empowers residents, develops talent, and delivers cutting-edge technology where it matters most: the local level.”

Key things to know:

  • MOU signing featured local, county and state lawmakers and officials, as well as company leadership, business leaders and others
  • Under the years-long MOU, Englewood Cliffs and LG CNS will explore collaboration on the deployment of:
    • Smart poles and smart infrastructure
    • Application of AI, digital twins and IoT technologies
    • Enhancing cybersecurity and data resilience
    • Internship opportunities and workforce readiness programs for state residents
  • Supports the Englewood Cliffs School District’s Digital Pathways Initiative, creating:
    • New avenues for student internships at LG CNS
    • Free student access to the company’s Innovation Lab
    • Early exposure to careers in technology, data science and AI
  • Lays the foundation for piloting smart technologies, hosting digital literacy initiatives and exploring long-term opportunities to support Englewood Cliffs’ transformation into a technology and innovation hub

The agreement formally adopted by the Borough Council June 19 is non-binding and does not authorize deployment of any technology without further public process. All activity must be reviewed, approved and implemented under Borough oversight.

Meeting 21st century demands

The Englewood Cliffs Borough Council played a key role in advancing this initiative.

“Like many municipalities in New Jersey, we were well into the 21st century but still operating with outdated systems better suited for the last,” said Councilman Tim Koutroubas. “Core operations at Borough Hall were inefficient and out of step with the demands of modern governance. Mayor Park’s administration has remained focused on evaluating, modernizing, and reimagining how local government serves its residents.

“While meaningful progress has been made, today’s initiative marks a significant step forward. It reflects a clear vision for a future where innovation drives impact and technology strengthens communities.”

“LG CNS is honored to partner with Englewood Cliffs to shape a smarter, more resilient future,” said Lee. “Our shared goal is to demonstrate how global technology can uplift local communities and create a scalable model for innovation across the country.”

Park said the MOU represents more than a document.

“It represents momentum,” said Park. “Together with LG CNS, we are setting the foundation for Englewood Cliffs to become a beacon of responsible innovation where smart solutions serve public purpose and technology empowers people.

“We’re ready to lead.”
