Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) will instal 500 artificial intelligence-enable closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras this year as part of the government’s effort to create a smart city.

Iskandar Puteri mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said the plan was part of MBIP’s Strategic Plan 2026 to turn the city into a safe and sustainable city.

“MBIP was awarded for its low-carbon planning for Iskandar Puteri’s low-carbon project (to build agile communities and sustainable cities from within) at last year’s Malaysia Institute of Planners (MIP) Planning Excellence Award 2022.

“We plan to live up to that recognition by placing these AI CCTVs around the city so that the public can feel safe in our jurisdiction,” he said after attending the MBIP appreciation ceremony for strategic partners at the Sunway Hotel Big Box, Iskandar Puteri.

The cameras will be placed in public and hotspot areas in phases by local developers as part of the city council’s public-private partnership.

“Each CCTV is equipped with a facial and vehicle recognition system, which is a very important feature when it comes to creating a safe and smart city.

“The city council will also work closely with the police so that they can get any data needed based on the footage once the CCTVs are in place,” he said.

The mayor added that each CCTV camera costs between RM7,000 and RM30,000, depending on its AI capabilities.

Mohd Haffiz said the city council was also planning to place smart traffic lights, smart lighting and parking systems.

“All of these developments will lead towards the creation of the Iskandar Puteri Command Centre where we can view and control the traffic flow, act immediately on any emergency or crime, and relay real-time information that can benefit the public,” he said.

He added that MBIP was prepared to organise 50 events this year with its strategic partners aimed at sharing the latest developments on MBIP with the public.
