Johor is moving swiftly to position itself as a regional leader in smart city development, with the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) at the core of its transformation.
Johor’s Smart City Vision
Johor Infrastructure Group’s managing director Datuk Mahadzir Aziz confirmed that the state is on the right path to becoming a model smart city under the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). He stressed that collaboration between the federal and state governments, supported by industry players, will be essential to ensure success.
Beyond Digital Transformation
Mahadzir highlighted that Johor’s smart city concept goes far beyond digital technology. It also prioritizes sustainability, safety, and the well-being of communities. Proposed developments include:
- An integrated transport system
- Efficient energy management
- Public services powered by big data
Federal and State Cooperation
Speaking after the Innovation Day Johor 2025: Digital Transformation and AI for a Smart Johor program, Mahadzir explained that industry players and government stakeholders are already reviewing how best to adapt construction and infrastructure projects to align with smart city goals. This integrated approach aims to balance economic growth with quality of life improvements for residents.
Government Commitment to Competitiveness
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi reaffirmed the state government’s determination to make Johor a leader in regional smart city development. He emphasized that policy frameworks will be aligned to ensure sustainability and competitiveness while enhancing efficiency in public services.
Strengthening Ties with Singapore
Foreign investment, especially from Singapore through the JS-SEZ, is expected to accelerate Johor’s smart transformation. Onn Hafiz noted that such cooperation not only brings in cutting-edge technology but also strengthens Johor’s longstanding economic partnership with Singapore, positioning the state as a vital hub for innovation in Southeast Asia.
Towards Regional Leadership
With sustainability and people-centric design at its core, Johor aims to stand on par with developed nations in the smart city race. Its focus on green, sustainable, and community-friendly technology positions the state to become a benchmark for urban development in the region.
Johor’s smart city ambitions under the JS-SEZ mark a turning point in its urban and economic landscape. By integrating advanced infrastructure, sustainable practices, and cross-border investment, Johor is preparing to deliver long-term benefits for its residents while reinforcing its strategic ties with Singapore.
