Maharashtra Government is planning to implement the fundamentals of democracy in a more focused manner and talking the concept of government by the people, for the people and of the people a little more seriously.

Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), which also happens to be the largest municipal corporation in the country, has now come out with the web portal of its own. This web portal is dedicated to address the issues of the citizens of Mumbai - resolving issues that they would have and also in bringing the government closer to the people.

With the help of this portal, one can forget standing in long queues or travelling long distances for getting birth or death certificates made.

There would also be other such benefits that the people of Mumbai can get through this portal like getting their MPFA licences, trade licences, hoarding licences, advertisement licences, and even their complaints registration for water works, et al.

Shubha Raul, Mayor of Mumbai, on the occasion said, "It is with great pride that I announce the successful completion of the ambitious Citizens Portal under the e-governance initiative of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. I am very happy to dedicate this project to the service of the citizens of Mumbai as it will enhance the efficiency of the working of the Corporation, make it even more transparent and save valuable time of the citizens."

Although it is a noteworthy step that would be significant in the direction of e-governance but the basic question would still be how many people in Mumbai would have access to the net and technology to make a use of this. Also, in the past we have seen, quite a few sites coming up from the government's side but they are never updated on time and failed to provide the promised service. Hope, atleast this one is able to hit the bull's eye and taking a cue from the Mumbai's Municipal Corporation even other municipal corporations would initiate such sites that makes the lives of their citizens easier and also come closer to them. If nothing at least a step has been taken towards governance with the use of technology, something which is prevalent in the West.

Urbanisation has taken place quite suddenly in India. With it came the problems related to the cities. Population is contiously growing in the cities and that calls for proper management of administration. e-governance is the most convenient and most efficient way to reach people and make the things work in a better way.

Well managed things lead to better environment for business and this would help in making things better.
