Jharkhand will soon be a part of the ambitious crime and criminal tracking network system (CCTNS) project of the Union Home Ministry to keep tab on crime and criminals in the state.
Setting the tone for its priority towards bringing about qualitative change in approach of policing, the newly installed Arjun Munda government has given its go ahead to the plan at the first cabinet meeting.
The system aims to create a nationwide networked infrastructure for IT-enabled criminal tracking system. Spanning across 35 states and Union Territories, it will link about 14,000 police stations and 6,000 higher police offices across the country.
The ambitious project includes vertical connectivity of police units at various levels within the state and between states and Union territories as well as horizontal connectivity, linking police functions at state and central levels to external entities.
As one of the largest e-Governance projects in the country, the network system will also present a citizen-interface to provide basic services to citizens.
When implemented, the application will link the state crime records bureau with the national crime record bureau, thereby creating a database that can be accessed in real-time from any police station across the country.
The State government intends to spend Rs 90 crore during this fiscal to install computers at important police stations of major cities like Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Hazaribag and Bokaro and linking them up with the Crime Investigation Department (CID) at the State police headquarter.
Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), law and order, DK Pandey said that records of crime and persons with criminal antecedents would be digitized so as to allow quick transfer of crime-related data from one police station to another.
“As the proposal has now got the cabinet nod, the Home Department will decide its modalities,” Pandey said.
According to senior police officers, criminal tracking network could also be of great help for the police to keep a tab on activities of the Maoists, who are virtually running a parallel government in rural areas of the State.
With Jharkhand turning out to be the most favoured destination for investors of late, the nature of crime has also varied considerably.
