The civic agency will assign different areas to its 50,000 safai karamcharis who will be responsible for all sanitation-related work. Till now, the assistant sanitation inspector (ASI) of an area used to decide on the deployment of safai karamcharis.
"At present, people do not know who is responsible for keeping their area clean, as we didn't have a dedicated safai karamchari for each area. But now we will assign each karamchari a road or an area which he has to maintain,'' said an MCD official. While reviewing the e-governance project recently, MCD decided to include this module on sanitation.
MCD is working on this module and it is likely to be ready in the next three-four months. Though the civic body has a list of sanitation inspectors and safai karamcharis responsible for different areas, there is no list regarding roads. The civic agency is in the process of assigning the vast network of roads to its 50,000 safai karamcharis. MCD officials say local resident will be able to keep a check on the safai karamcharis whether they are routinely coming or not. "One just has to type the name of the road and they will get all the information about the person responsible for maintaining it. We will also put photographs of our safai karamcharis on the net,'' said an MCD official.
MCD has recently launched a page on Facebook to monitor regular cleaning of the dhalaos in the city. Apart from lodging complaints regarding dhalos, Delhiites used the page to highlight the poor sanitation services provided by MCD. People have uploaded pictures of dirty streets, overflowing bins, etc
