The jail administration has started trials for the project under which the biometric data of over 650 inmates, which include around 30 females, will be collected. The project is part of the modernisation drive undertaken at Burail jail, under which all jail records will be computerised to facilitate easy data retrieval.
The latest project will enable the jail authorities to get all records of any inmate with the click of a mouse. They will not have to get into the cumbersome process of looking into hundreds of files even to find even the minutest of details.
The record of each inmate will contain information like his criminal history, medical records, what the inmate was doing in the jail and the labour he was getting for it. The move is also likely to simplify and lessen the workload of the jail staff.
Speaking to Newsline, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) (Burail Jail) Amandeep Singh said, “When a new convict will come to the jail, we will record their finger prints in order to maintain proper computerised records of the guilty. A separate record will be maintained for every inmate and updated from time to time. The finger prints will also enable us to identify a person who has previously spent time in the jail even if he has changed his name.”
He added that the jail authorities would also be putting in place a Visitor Management System, under which details of all persons who visit an inmate in the jail will be recorded.
“This will ensure that only genuine people are meeting persons lodged in jails. Their details will be fed into into the records of the person lodged inside,” added the DSP.
