Transforming Government since 2001
If all goes as planned, the Corporation will enable all its services online within a week. Ongoing discussions hint that the much-delayed ‘e-governance project’ of the Kochi Corporation is likely to be launched by next week.

The Corporation is trying to get Minister for Urban Affairs Manjalamkuzhi Ali to inaugurate it. “The project is on the verge of completion after overcoming many hurdles. We are trying our best to inaugurate it by next week,” confirmed Deputy Mayor B Bhadra.

The `8-crore programme, announced in 2007 and implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was criticisedy for lagging behind which led to cost escalation. It was proposed to be rolled out last August, but the work came to a standstill when it was struck with an additional expense of `4 lakh. It was put on fast track since last June by the joint efforts of then Corporation Secretary Ajit Patil and Deputy Mayor B Bhadra.

The technical solutions for the website was provided by Tata Consultancy Services and the detailed project report was made by Wipro.

In the first stage, 13 modules of the e-governance project will be launched. The official website of the Corporation, ‘www.corporationofcochin.gov’ will also be re-launched from its present address to ‘www.corporationofcochin.net’.

The project will be beneficial in three ways. At the conception level it will bring in more transparency to the governance. In the final phase of implementation the Corporation offices would turn paper-less.

The third one is at the utility level. It will empower people to access basic services from home itself.

The key services include online issuance of birth certificate, death certificate, marriage certificate and trade licence.

The booking availability of the Town Hall, property tax collection and assessment, professional tax collection, assessment and issuance of occupancy certificate, minutes of the recent council meetings and that of standing committee meetings will also be made available online.
