Presently, there is no strict monitoring of the staff attendances. This usually leads to a large number of absentees on working days.
"This is an attempt to overhaul the attendance issue. Absenteeism affects the image of the corporation," said Rawat.
Presently, the system will be applicable for officials from the primary departments, like Land, Tax, Accounts, etc. In another two months, it will be done even for the clerical-level employees, added Rawat.
Employees have a mixed reaction towards this new system.
Demanding anonymity, a senior official said, "The move is good. But, it will put undue pressure on our attendance. Some of us manage our work from outside office at times. ."
The machine will cost around Rs 15,000. One machine holds the capacity to cover as many as 500 employees. The corporation is also planning to install cctv cameras in the future to monitor the working hours of the employees.
The move has garnered much appreciation from the residents in the city, who claim to have suffered a lot due to employee absenteeism at the DMC office.
Rajiv Kumar, a resident of Deep Lok area, said, "Many of the employees are not available during office hours. To get our work done, we had to visit the corporation several times. The biometric attendance will be a great step towards faster work culture in the corporation."
