In a bid to help city police expand the fleet of electric hoverboards, Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Limited (SCTL) is procuring 10 self-balancing electric scooters to be used for patrolling in the city. Powered by a 48V 14AH lead acid battery, the driver only scooters will weigh 60 kg and above. The maximum driving speed will be 18km per hour and it will have a load capacity of 120 kg. The full charge time will be six to seven hours, says a request for proposal issued by the SCTL.

The vehicle will be designed to transmit real time location (GPS) via GSM/GPRS through API/Interface with integrated command and control centre of SCTL. As part of remote monitoring and data reporting, each vehicle will be fitted with a telemetric device which will be connected to integrated command control centre that can monitor, collect, and report information related to each vehicle, including vehicle identification data, daily distance run, routes, timings, vehicle tracking, charging event information, vehicle own times, energy consumption, fleet operator ID, etc.

The city police had introduced the use of e-scooters in July on a pilot basis. With concepts like night life catching up in the city and vehicular traffic being restricted in many places for a specific period, cops plan to rely on such e-scooters for surveillance.

The police launched the e-scooters to be used on narrow, congested roads where patrolling is difficult. The hover patrolling is also being done to curb unauthorised parking and to ensure smooth flow of traffic especially during the conduct of fairs as part of festivals when parking becomes a major concern.

The city police have already benefited from the smart city project to introduce smart signal systems and surveillance. Face recognition and automatic number plate recognition cameras are being introduced under the intelligent traffic management system. Face recognition cameras will come up in 14 places and already it is live at Medical College Junction. The automatic number plate recognition cameras with a storage capacity of 60 days will come up in 35 locations. As many as 300 ANPR cameras will be installed in these junctions and 91 ANPR cameras are already live, and feed is being sent day and night to the traffic and safety command and control centre. In case of crimes being committed using vehicles, if an information regarding number plate is given, feed from ANPR will be searched to identify the matching vehicles and this will lead to the culprits.

The 350 PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras with 360-degree facility and bullet cameras focused on selected arms at various junctions are also being activated. Live feed has been enabled from these cameras at 49 locations in the city. The high definition, night vision enabled cameras provide a complete view of major junctions in the city. Under the smart city project, 54 red light violation cameras are also being activated at 10 junctions in the city.
