A senior Smart City official said that on a daily basis, over 900 people use the free public Wi-Fi service offered by the Smart City Mission at important places across Panaji.
Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd said that it has installed 500 access points for public Wi-Fi. These locations include maximum footfall areas like marketplaces, road stretches, key junctions, the vicinity of government offices, and recreation spots such as parks, lakes, educational institutes, and religious places.
This service has been provided to citizens as part of ‘Goa Intelligent City Management System – Panaji City’ project, which is implemented at a cost of Rs 13.5 crore, including GST and five years’ support.
A senior official said that this service was made operational in April 2023 and till date, 1386.2GB of data have been consumed by the users.
“This system works on OTP-based connectivity,” an official explained. “An SSID (service set identifier) named Goa Smart City will show once the user is in the range of access point searches for available networks. Upon selection of the SSID, it will show connected and will direct the user to the authentication page, where details like name, contact number, and email id need to be submitted by the user. Once submitted, the user will receive an OTP on the mobile number. Upon submission of OTP, the user will be able to access the internet.”
