Transforming Government since 2001

The Smart City Mission in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has been closed and now there will be no more funding from the Government of India (GoI) under the mission in J&K, which was launched here in June 2017, two years after the launch of this mission nationwide.

“The Smart City Mission has been closed in J&K and no more works will now be undertaken under Smart City Mission in this UT,” General Manager, Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL), Ashish Anand confirmed, when approached by the Northlines.

Meanwhile, official sources informed that the Smart City Management, both in Jammu and Srinagar, will soon approach the government with the proposal that it must be allotted different development and people friendly works to execute different centrally sponsored schemes in both Jammu and Srinagar.

“The proposal will soon be sent to the J&K government in this regard,” they further informed.

The Smart City Mission in India was launched on June 25, 2015, but in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) it was initiated following the selection of Srinagar and Jammu cities in the third round of the national competition in June 2017 to be developed as Smart Cities with major implementation work gaining momentum in the following year.

The J&K was further given an extension of 2 years for completion of different Smart City projects due to Covid 19.

Out of the total 127 projects sanctioned under the Jammu Smart City Mission by the GoI, 125 projects i.e about 98 per cent, have already been successfully completed, while the remaining two projects are currently under implementation.

Jammu Smart City has received the entire central financial assistance of Rs 489 crore, which constitutes 100 percent of the total central share allocated for the city of temples.

Out of this amount, ₹455 crore has already been utilized, reflecting 93 percent utilization of the funds released by the Government of India.
