Transforming Government since 2001
India has registered a nine per cent increase in the use of internet to access government services or products during the last 12 months, according to a study by Taylor Nelson Sofres. 31 per cent of adults in the country have used government online services in the last one year compared to 22 per cent in 2001, the study says.

This is in line with a global increase in government online use of 15 per cent over the same period of time, it said while adding this placed India as one of the medium ranked users of such services among 31 countries and territories surveyed.

Based on the data of regular internet users, the study said the country's sample which are drawn from socio-class A and B only, can not be compared directly to other countries surveyed.

During the last 12 months, the proportion of men using government online services has increased by seven per cent while proportion of women using the go services has grown by 10 per cent.

Perception of safety about using go have improved in 2002 in India with some 50 per cent of the internet users saying they felt safe disclosing personal information like credit card and bank account numbers online compared to 47 per cent in 2001.

Highest levels of government use are found in Sweden at 57 per cent with Norway 56 per cent, and Singapore and Denmark with 53 per cent each.
