Bahrain is in the forefront of developing a comprehensive and modern e-voting system, said Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Shaikh Ahmed bin Ateyatala Al Khalifa.

Its implementation in next year’s elections has not been decided yet, he said on Friday, adding that neither the Cabinet Affairs Ministry nor the e-Government Authority is entitled to decide on the issue.

In an interview with our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej, the minister said Bahrain ranks second in the Arab world, eighth in Asia and 42nd worldwide in terms of the Global e-Government Readiness Index.

Bahrain also aims to top GCC countries and be among the best five Asian countries. The kingdom currently provides 108 e-services which will reach 200 by the end of next year, he added.

The most important e-services to be launched next year include those relating to notary public to ease legal procedures, e-registration for investors to reduce time of licence issuance and housing applications, Shaikh Ahmed said.
