The United Nations e-Government Readiness Report 2010 has ranked Bahrain as the top e-government portal in the Middle East and the 13th globally, senior Bahraini officials said Monday. The new placement on the biennial report - where the Gulf island has moved up 29 spots on the index ranking from its previous 42 spot - also ranks it 3rd Asia-wide behind South Korea and Singapore, after placing 8th in 2008.

South Korea ranked first in the report, followed by the United States, and Canada.

Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Sheikh Ahmed bin Atteyatallah al- Khalifa, said that the results were the product of forming the e- government authority to lead the transition to electronic services at the right time and place, adding that improving e-government services were in accordance with Bahrain Economic Vision for 2030.

Chief Executive Officer of the e-government Authority, Mohammed Ali al-Qaed, pointed out that the keenness of the Gulf island to participate in this UN assessment stems from the fact that it does not just focus on just the implementation of the initiatives, but on the extent of benefit derived from such electronic services by the users.

The report is issued by the United Nations on the readiness of countries in the world for the application of information communications technology (ICT) and the extent of access to e- government by the public and at what level.

It also identifies the use of e-government as a tool that increases the accessibility of information and provision of government services to the public in some 192 countries.
