Bahrain’s e-government projects are rapidly catching up, especially in government data and on e-government, Bahrain is the top country in Asia, said Sweden’s Former Prime Minister John Fredrik Reinfeldt.

On the sidelines of the inauguration of the eGovernment Forum in Bahrain, held at the Isa Cultural Centre, he said that Bahrain has emerged as a global leader.

The developments in Bahrain are very impressive, he added. “Sweden has somewhat different composition. We have more of internet usage, more usage of international applications and thus we would like to benefit from Bahrain in the areas where this country has gone forward,” the former prime minister said. The experience thus is different, but Bahrain’s experience is enriching. The differences can be attributed to historical and other reasons, he added.

Sweden is trying to bring its experience to the Bahrain side so they could gain from it, as well, said Reinfeldt.

Bahrain’s eGovernment activities have grown much to be mentioned in the UN, a big credential for the country. “The European Union presence here is also a big boost to the conference. A lot of digitalization in Europe is done on a European Union platform. Brussels is a major contributor to the digitalization process in Europe,” he added.

Turning to the e-Government help in enhancing efficiency and reducing cost of government services, the former prime minister said, “We made a survey between 2000 and 2005. We found a 33 per cent reduction in costs due to the fact that we had e-government services. The services were less time consuming. In the digital world of today most of Sweden’s companies are competing in their services cross-border. They find that being more efficient is key to staying more competitive.”

On transparency synergies and exploitation of potentials G2G, between the two nations, he said that Sweden has high penetration of internet usage. Therefore in Sweden, business is even further developing.

This includes e-government and business projects of the public. This creates more jobs and the race to stay more competitive in the global scenario.
