Award aims to promote sustainable development by bringing global cities closer

Congratulatory messages have been pouring in for General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, after a UAE initiative won a prestigious e-Government award.

Shaikh Mohammad most recently received a congratulatory message from Won Soon Park, the mayor of Seoul, who lauded the initiative during the recently concluded first World e-Governments Organisation of Cities and Local Governments (WeGO) Awards 2012 in Barcelona.

The accolades come following the recognition accorded to the Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure (AD-SDI) programme run by the Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (Adsic) in the form of the Outstanding e-Government Prize in the Open City category during the awards ceremony on November 13.

Launched in 2010, WeGO aims to promote sustainable city development based on e-Government by encouraging collaborations among e-governing cities. It also aims to bring greater efficiency and transparency into public administration.

Seoul is the president city of WeGO while Barcelona is the executive vice-president city. Abu Dhabi is one of seven vice-president cities along with Frankfurt, Nairobi, Paris, San Francisco, and Sao Paulo.

Adsic is the agency responsible for overseeing Abu Dhabi’s Information Technology agenda in line with Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. It also oversees the e-Government programme of the emirate to facilitate the exchange of geospatial data among local government agencies and other related entities.

Rashid Lahej Al Mansouri, Adsic director general, received the award in Barcelona. Abdul Karim Al Raeesi, Adsic’s director of strategy and planning, was also present at the event.

“The Outstanding e-Government Prize that we received during the recent WeGO Awards reaffirms the success of the Abu Dhabi Government in adopting modern technologies and best practices in the delivery of public services,” Al Mansouri said. “This award also reinforces the prestigious position achieved by Abu Dhabi as a modern city that adopts latest technologies that enable various government agencies and individuals to carry out their duties easily,” he added.
