Government-run job portal sees 36% rise in applications

A growing number of jobseekers are searching for vacancies in different government departments in the UAE given the perception that public sector employees receive better benefits and compensation compared to those in privately owned firms.

According to the latest statistics released by Dubai eGovernment Department (DeG), the number of applications submitted to the government-run portal, eJob (www.ejob.ae), has recently jumped by 36 per cent.

The eGovernment attributed this to their successful awareness campaign about their initiative during their participation in Careers UAE in May 2013. The number of job hunters vying for new positions has increased to 3,716 over the three weeks that followed the campaign, compared to 2,379 applicants prior to that.

The bilingual online portal is dedicated to jobseekers wanting to pursue a career in the government and companies in the public sector looking for new staff. It enables applicants to search for full-time and part-time vacancies and, at the same time, allows organisations to access a rich database of candidates.

DeG hopes to bring together all government agencies under the eJob umbrella over the coming years. This is in line with the government’s goal to enhance government integration through online services.

According to Ahmad Bin Humaidan, director-general of Dubai eGovernment, the rise in job applications only reflects the public’s increasing confidence in electronic services and Dubai’s “leading position as a destination” for talent from the UAE and around the world.

There seems to be more government agencies reaching out to jobseekers as well. Bin Humaidan said that the number of government entities participating in eJob has increased to 13 this year. These agencies include the Department of Economic Development, Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities and Dubai Courts Department, among others.

Candidates can browse vacancies through different job categories such as customer services, engineering, finance, human resources, information technology and operation. Applicants also have the option to search via the name of the government entity or the date the vacancy was posted.

Data released by the Ministry of Labour earlier highlighted a gap in compensation and benefits between workers in the government and private organisations.
