On 25 June 2012 in the United Nations Headquarters, Republic of Korea will receive 3 special awards for three first positions in 3 clusters from 4 categories of the UN e-Government Survey. The country has set high standards for e-government development, in line with the categories described by the UN e-Government Survey.

The UN e-Government Survey, which publishes every two years, serves as a tool for decision-makers to identify their areas of strength and challenges. This year’s winners embody the vision and commitment necessary to transform public administration to ensure efficacy, transparency, responsiveness, participation and inclusion in the delivery of public services.

Republic of Korea has got the first position in Global ranking (category one) achieved tangible results and has excelled in all aspects of the UN e-Government Survey. The country has established robust telecommunications infrastructure, invested in the development of human capital capacity and expanded usage of e-Government facilities including multiple channels and a whole-of-government approach in promoting equity to bridge the digital divide by extending service delivery to all, particularly vulnerable groups. The citizens of the country have access to various e-services and e-content, and benefit from sharing their opinions on-line and interacting directly with government decision-makers so that their views can be incorporated in the planning, implementation and evaluation of public policies.

Republic of Korea has become the top performing country in Asia region (category three) and shared the first position with Netherlands in the area of e-participation (category four). Republic of Korea as Netherlands has adopted citizen inclusion as key in providing “customer-oriented” e-Government services.

The country has excelled in providing horizontal and vertical e-Government linkages among various institutions and nodal points, creating enhanced opportunities for greater participation and social inclusiveness. These include not only e-information and e-consultation aspects, but also innovative modalities of e-decision making, thus highlighting the potential of e-Governance for engaging the public in the decisions affecting.

In addition, Republic of Korea will receive three UN Public Service awards in the areas of anticorruption, gender mainstreaming and science and technology. Anti-corruption and Civil Rights Commission will receive 1st place award from Asia and the Pacific region for its programme of integrity assessment (category one). Ministry of Gender Equality and Family will be awarded 2nd place from the region for its Youth Participation Committee. Finally National Science and Technology Commission will receive 2nd place award from the region for advancing knowledge management in government.
