Transforming Government since 2001

Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province has obtained Smart City Certification in the '2025 Smart City Certification Contest' organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Suwon City has been recognized for its capabilities and excellence as a smart city by achieving Smart City Certification for the third consecutive time, following the pilot certification in 2021 and again in 2023.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has been holding the Smart City Certification Contest since 2021 to assess cities' smart capabilities and identify outstanding cases. The certification is granted after a comprehensive evaluation of the level of smart city services and infrastructure, public sector capabilities and innovation, as well as governance and institutional frameworks of the participating local governments.

Suwon City received high marks in the transportation services sector, particularly for the implementation of the 'Smartphone Use Restriction School Zone' and the 'Intelligent Traffic Information System at the Urban Safety Integrated Center.'

The Smartphone Use Restriction School Zone is a project that installs Bluetooth devices in child protection zones to prevent children from walking while using their smartphones. When a pedestrian safety app is installed on a smartphone, all apps are disabled while walking within the child protection zone, except for phone calls. Bluetooth terminals have been installed in the school zones of 11 elementary schools.

The Suwon City Urban Safety Integrated Center was the first in the country to use its own budget to build and operate an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), which has since been advanced. The center collects and analyzes over 10,000 traffic data points in real time to efficiently manage traffic signals and provide road traffic information.

A Suwon City official stated, "We will continue to integrate smart technologies into all aspects of citizens' lives, including transportation, safety, and tourism, to create a smart city that residents can truly experience."
