Students and architects who may want to respond to current building and climate-related challenges can soon learn how to design and develop environmentally friendly, efficient smart cities over a 30-day period.
The course, titled “Postgraduate Certificate in Smart Cities Development and Management,” will hold its first classes on Sept. 22, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is a collaboration between urban planning and architecture firm Palafox Associates and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).
German Paulo de Mesa, architect and innovations director of Palafox Associates, made this announcement at the company’s 36th Anniversary Celebration on July 22.
The curriculum is divided into five key steps: The Big Picture, an overview about the development and management of smart cities; Approaching design; Infrastructure; Proper implementation and Measurement; and Leadership.
The course will engage students in the ways of planning progress and designing smart cities and green buildings for about a month. Classes will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The course will be half taught by AIM professors and Palafox experts, who are co-developing each session together. Its target students include government employees, developers, key decision-makers, and smart city enthusiasts.
During the event, de Mesa also said that Felino “Jun” Palafox Jr., founder and managing partner of Palafox Associates, has been awarded by AIM as an Executive in Residence and Adjunct faculty member.
De Mesa described the process of the course formation: “Along with the head of the [School for Executive Education and Lifelong Learning] Program Professor Albert Mateo and the Program Head Professor Masaki Mitsuhashi, we have been working toward a program, crafting the curriculum, and asking our clients and other potential students what they would like to learn, assessing and tweaking who this program is for.”
According to de Mesa, Palafox signed the memorandum of agreement with AIM last March 20. The goal was to capitalize on his experiences as well as AIM’s education facilities and expertise.
