The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Western Visayas is gearing up Capiz province for the Smart and Sustainable Communities (SSC) program.
The SSC program of DOST targets seven outcomes for a smart city, namely economic development, improved quality of life, enhanced public safety, better mobility, better health and wellness, environmental sustainability, and government efficiency.
It will focus on driving digital transformation by providing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) tools and DOST systems to help local government units (LGUs) modernize their services and improve community support.
Provincial Science and Technology Office (PTSO) Provincial Director Juafe Abaereles noted that the program seeks to tackle challenges in urban development and smart city initiatives by leveraging science, technology, and innovation.
“Specifically, it focuses on advancing data utilization and sharing, fostering partnerships, and promoting research,” she added.
Abaereles personally presented the program to Capiz Governor Fredenil Castro, who also expressed his full support and pledged assistance to the program.
Moreover, the province of Capiz will host the 2025 Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) at the Robinsons Place in Roxas City, following DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr.’s mandate to continue bringing science even closer to the people.
The 2025 RSTW celebration will highlight relevant science and technology (S&T) innovations, programs, and projects in the country.
These include technologies developed by State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) across the region, DOST-Research and Development Institutes (RDIs), as well as major S&T projects and initiatives from other agencies and organizations.
Abaereles stated that it will likewise feature experiential exhibits, interactive and collaborative learning activities, and multi-stakeholder talks and sessions.
She also added that the exhibits will be divided into five clusters: Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Blue Economy, Green Economy, Education, and “Tek Tienda” for DOST-assisted micro, small, and medium enterprises.
