IT Minister Austin Gatt said that the government's excellent results in eGovernment were not attained by coincidence or because othe EU member states did not have the capacity to provide excellent eGovernment.

A report issued by the European Commission has placed Malta second in the ranking for the best online services provided by the local government.

Addressing a press conference, Dr.Austin Gatt commented that the results are the natural outcome of seven years of hard work that is the pride of all those who contributed to it.

Minister Austin Gatt said that though this year's EU report gives Malta good cause to celebrate, the challenge of remaining on top will require Malta to reinvent the eGovernment and anticipate developments.

He announced that in the coming days, the Ministry will be launching a new on line environment for public services to improve on www.gov.mt that in any case scored 98 per cent in this year's rankings.

Moreover, a more sophisticated electronic identity infrastructure that will be able to issue digital certificates to users of sensitive public services such as fiscal, health or similar services.

He added that a new ICT strategy to drive the national ICT program forward right up to the beginning of the next decade and that in the eGovernment filed will aim to ensure that all administrative services are provided on line in a personalised environment.
