In the new digital age, it is important for people to embrace the digital skills and values of the new and rapidly emerging world of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

However, the use of ICT must be in harmony with our core traditional values i.e. they must first be integrated into the values of our MIB (Malay Islamic Monarchy) philosophy.

This observation was made by the Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, during the official launching of the "e-Hijrah Strategy and Blueprint for ICT in Education for National Development" at the Empire Hotel & Country Club yesterday.

"This is what e-Hijrah is ... it is our way forward into the digital world," said Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar, the guest of honour of yesterday's event.

"e-Hijrah allows us to define and build our own digital lives and define and build our digital values and skills that are inclusive of all stakeholders, holistic and aligned to our needs," he added.

According to him, the e-Hijrah Strategy and Blueprint is holistic and integrated to the rapidly emerging 21" century education practices, as well as the harmonisation of MIB and ICT.

"It is this simultaneous approach that we believe will enable us to transition to producing 21" century digital citizens who are well-grounded in our values and traditions that have stood the test of time," he said.

The e-Hijrah Strategy and Blueprint was developed in 2010 through an extensive process led by the Department of ICT and its consultant, globalSOF

The development of e-Hijrah was a collaborative effort across the Ministry of Education and a number of government agencies, including the e-Government National Centre, Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Communications, Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), school leaders, teachers, students and ICT industry leaders who play a vital role in the design, development and validation of e-Hijrah.

e-Hijrah is the overall initiative for ICT in Education led by the Department of ICT in the Ministry of Education. The first output of the e-Hijrah initiative was the e-Hijrah Strategy, Blueprint and Implementation Plan.

The e-Hijrah Strategy and Blueprint translates the broad vision and objectives outlined in Wawasan 2035 (2035 vision), SPN21 (National Education System for the 21" Century), e-Government Strategic Plan and other coordinating national strategies into a set of focused pathways with an Implementation Roadmap for ICT in Education.

The Minister of Education said: "We now have a tremendous opportunity to leap forward with a number of highly focused developments in the ICT organisation, as well as processes and practices, under the umbrella of the e-Hijrah Strategy and Blueprint."

"The ministry will provide the tools and the investment in ICT that are needed but it will require each individual, whether you are in a school or ministry department, to take up the personal challenges and effort these changes will require of you," he added.

Pehin Orang Kaya Seri ,Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar encouraged the attendees at yesterday's event to "embrace this opportunity for personal and professional growth", as e-Hijrah is a key part of our journey that will shape the strong, stable, and resilient future for generations of Bruneians described in His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 2035 Vision (Wawasan Brunei 2035).

The e-Hijrah Strategy and Blueprint, as well as e-Hijrah School Kits', will be distributed in various versions to the public, Ministry of Education, school leaders and internationally over the next month.
