Government to invest BGN 40m in boosting internet access

The digitalisation of state government and providing internet access to all citizens are among the key priorities of the government, deputy minister of transport and ICT Parvan Rusinov tells the Pari daily. These goals are interconnected and will help the development of the IT business in Bulgaria. E-government will encourage the use of internet, which in turn will boost demand for IT products, he adds.

Internet

One of our first tasks is providing countrywide internet coverage. Currently internet service penetration is 36.7% and only 2.6 Bulgarians use the net. As much as BGN 40 million from the regional development programme will be invested in infrastructure to meet that goal, starting from the more densely populated towns, Rusinov says. According to different assessments, full internet coverage will cost some BGN 800 million.

e-government

Electronic government is another priority. Some of the infrastructure has been built already but most of the work is yet to be done, Rusinov is adamant. We want to develop the most popular services to help citizens and businesses. About 20 pilot services will be launched from next year.
