FiksGataMi, an open source-based service to report local street problems to Norwegian local authorities, launched an upgraded version of its website on 12 September 2011. This new version - FiksGataMi v2.0 - is easier for both citizens and municipalities to use.

FiksGataMi is a nationwide service to report faults and problems in the public sphere of local government, including holes in the road, graffiti, unauthorised dumping of rubbish and defective street lighting. Using the FiksGataMi website, citizens are able to report problems they have found to the relevant municipality or discuss them with other users.

With FiksGataMi v2.0, citizens can create their own account on the website to follow up their cases, while municipalities and other government agencies are now able to update the status of the issues which concern them. The new version also has a map view of the problems reported to each authority in the public sector.

From its launch on 7 March 2011 up until 12 September 2011, 6 874 problems had been registered on FiksGataMi by 4 851 different citizens, of which 2 075 had been reported as 'fixed' by the citizen. 36 municipalities have responded positively to FiksGataMi by placing a link to it on their websites.

The Norwegian UNIX User Group (NUUG), which runs FiksGataMi, has further developed the service together with its British sister project FixMyStreet. It now supports Open311, an application programming interface (API) which, among other things, facilitates the extraction of various data and statistics in a standardised form. This standardisation makes it easier to extract statistics and to chart reports using the user's own maps or other web mapping systems.

Background Information:

FiksGataMi was set up and is run by volunteers from NUUG. It was developed with support from Friprog (the Open Source Competence Centre, in English) and Government Administration Services (Departementenes servicesenter - DSS, in Norwegian) based on free software from the British MySociety. NUUG is a non-profit association of professional computer users, software developers and operations personnel, and is focused on open standards, open source and UNIX-like operating systems.
