Uganda has declared its interest to connect its national broadband backbone to Tanzania’s to further bind the good economic relationships that the two countries share.

Udanda’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Jinny Saamanya made the plans public over the weekend in Dar es Salaam.

A delegate from Uganda’s ICT Ministry was in the country last week to learn and share experiences on various ICT related issues in relation to social and economic development with experts of the Tanzania’s Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology.

Speaking at a briefing event at the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology in Dar es Salaam, the Ministry’s acting Permanent Secretary John Mngodo said the government has invested well science and technology that is why neighbouring country are attracted to join.

Mngodo noted that the national broadband backbone connects at least 8 points with neighbouring Kenya, Uganda at Mtukula, Burundi, Malawi and Rwanda. He said it is the government’s plan to ensure that by 2015 all Tanzanian villages are connected to the national broadband to simplify communication services in rural areas.
