Kenya National Libraries Services branches will be connected to free internet in a Sh72 million deal by data carrier Liquid Telecom Kenya and regulator Communications Authority of Kenya.

The 46 public libraries will each get an additional 11 computers, Kindles – hand-held electronic for reading books – and tablets from next month. The partnership enables readers to access fixed and wireless internet on either the KNLS' computers or on their own devices.

“Connecting the public libraries means everybody will now have access to digital and online information including e-government services, research, education services and employment opportunities,” Liquid Telecom Kenya (formerly Kenya Data Networks) chief executive Ben Roberts said in a statement yesterday. “With the Communications Authority coming on board as the main financier of the project, we have been able to connect the public libraries even in the most remote areas with high quality connections.”

The libraries are situated in 29 counties, with 26 of the 46 outlets already with an Internet connection, where adult and children content will be separated.

Entry into public libraries is free for children under the age of 14, while the rest pay Sh20 per visit.

“The decision to connect all our library branches was a result of the increasing need for digital content by our users,” KNLS ICT manager Alex Ombogi said.
