Deputy communications minister Elmir Velizadeh of Azerbaijan emphasized that Azerbaijan actively developing ICT area hopes for co-operation with Latvia in it.
“Over the past 5 years ICT sector growth in Azerbaijan made up about 32%. Its growth is expected this year as well despite the global economic crisis. To the large extent, this is a desert of private companies making 80% in this sector,” Velizadeh said.
He pointed out that between the two countries there are agreements in the area of ICT and there is Azerbaijani party’s desire to organize partnership with Latvian counterparts in the area of introduction of e-signature and TB broadcasting.
“Azerbaijan is drafting two strategic documents in the area of ICT. The country is applying already the second program in this direction for period 2009-12 and Action Plan on e-Government. As a whole, Azerbaijan is realizing more than 20 programs surrounding ICT sector,” Velizadeh said.
But the country has some problems with pricing for Internet services.
“We want to establish Internet price at the level of worldwide. But the problem is that Azerbaijan is far from information hubs and that is why it is forced to seek access to them through Russia and countries of Scandinavia,” Velizadeh said.
In this connection the deputy minister emphasized importance of completion of project of Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway that will help tackle problem of high prices for Internet in Azerbaijan.
