Power of AI and 5G central to initiative, which will aim to be a blueprint for the development of city infrastructure using the latest technology
The university campus in Belval has been chosen as the location for a €3 million “smart city” pilot project which aims to be a blueprint for the development of city infrastructure using AI and the latest technology.
The initiative aims to transform Belval into a “connected test bed for tomorrow’s cities”, according to the organisers of the Smartspires project, which was unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday by Elisabeth Margue, the Minister Delegate for Media and Connectivity.
It is led by a public-private consortium, including 5SKYE, Gcore, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (List) and Orange Luxembourg.
The pilot project, which will run for three years and is co-funded by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), promises to use tools including AI-enabled services and edge computing to turn the Belval campus into a beacon of the future.
To bring the technology to life, at least three smart towers will be built, combining 5G masts with computing power for AI, as well as IoT sensors, among other localised add-ons for better urban management that organisers hope will be replicated across Europe in the future.
“These towers will form the backbone for real-time and data-intensive applications that enhance urban management and services, offering a scalable model for European cities seeking to integrate advanced 5G, edge computing, and IoT solutions,” Gcore said in a press release.
“The three-year project will demonstrate how digital infrastructure and AI can power safer, cleaner, and more efficient urban services for residents and local authorities,” Gcore added.
Although the project involves testing the latest technology, Margue said that its “its true purpose is more about improving lives, enhancing sustainability, and shaping how cities across Europe can evolve in a more intelligent and responsive way”.
