Transforming Government since 2001

In the heart of the sprawling Kalahari Desert, where crimson sands stretch endlessly under the southern sky, Botswana is sketching a new silhouette on the horizon – one shaped not by mirages, but by ambition, innovation and sun-powered possibility.

Kalahari City, a multi-billion-dollar smart city initiative, has officially taken shape, unveiled by President Duma Boko in a ceremony that signalled a turning point in the nation’s development narrative.

Inspired by the glittering marvels of Dubai yet distinctly rooted in African ingenuity, this visionary metropolis promises to fuse high-tech infrastructure with sustainable living – right in one of the continent’s harshest terrains.

Spanning 85 square kilometres, the planned city will feature a 300MW solar power plant to drive clean energy use, fintech hubs and tech parks to attract digital entrepreneurs and startups, and a dedicated water pipeline and green design for environmental resilience.

It will also feature advanced transportation networks and modern commercial infrastructure, as well as luxury hotels, entertainment venues and cultural attractions to draw global tourists.

Beyond its shimmering skyline and smart grids, Kalahari City is designed as a special economic zone, aiming to recalibrate Botswana’s economy – long reliant on diamond exports – by shifting toward sectors like green energy, digital finance, tourism and trade.

Projections suggest the development will create between 20,000 and 30,000 jobs, opening opportunities for engineers, artisans, hospitality professionals and technologists.

For local communities, this is more than steel and solar panels – it is a chance to be part of a grand reimagining.

Zotus Group, a UK-based development firm, will lead the construction, blending international expertise with regional aspirations.

With dunes as its canvas and digital dreams as its blueprint, Kalahari City signals Botswana’s desire to assert itself not only as a resource-rich nation but as a tech-savvy trailblazer in sustainable urban transformation.
