Hallandstrafiken is implementing the Fairtiq mobile pay-as-you-go ticketing system that enables passengers to swipe on and off when they travel on the network.

Hallandstrafiken, the public transport operator for Sweden’s Halland region, has launched a pilot project with mobile technology specialist Fairtiq.

It marks Sweden’s first mobile pay-as-you-go (MPAYG) ticketing system.

Hallandstrafiken, the public transport operator for Sweden’s Halland region, has launched a pilot project with mobile technology specialist Fairtiq.

It marks Sweden’s first mobile pay-as-you-go (MPAYG) ticketing system.

When changing trains or buses, the app automatically recognises the change and continues to monitor the journey. When the passenger arrives at the destination, they swipe to end the journey. If they forget, the app sends a notification or automatically ends the journey. The best available fare is then automatically calculated and optimised on a daily basis.

Insights from the pilot will inform Hallandstrafiken’s long-term ticketing and pricing strategies. Hallandstrafiken is the first operator in Sweden to launch the Fairtiq system.

The implementation follows a successful nationwide launch in Denmark in 2024, where the Rejsekort app has already enabled more than 35 million journeys. Building on this momentum, the company is now expanding further in the Nordics. Alongside Sweden, a new rollout in Buskerud County, Norway, is underway.

Region Halland manages public transport in Halland, on Sweden’s west coast. Hallandstrafiken is part of the region’s Department for Regional Development and is responsible for bus, train, and specialised transport services, including school transport, medical transport, and services for passengers with special needs.

Fairtiq currently operates in nine countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.
