The World Bank in partnership with Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore, International Enterprise Singapore and the Moldovan Ministry of Informational Technologies and Communications are hosting a two-day seminar dedicated to Moldova's e-transformation through informational communication technologies (ICT).

A public relations officer of the WB Office in Chisinau, Victor Neagu, has said that World Bank Country Manager for Moldova, Melanie Marlett, said that "ICT has tremendous potential to spur development in Moldova." "To achieve this it is crucial to increase competition in the telecom sector and enhance the competitiveness of IT companies", The WB official stressed.

"Currently, ICT services represent 10 percent of Moldovan GDP, but there are substantial untapped resources in this sector. To make full use of these resources it is essential to improve regulation in the telecom industry in order to increase competition and enable the business environment to retain local talent in Moldova," Melanie Marlett said.

Attending the seminar, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that "ICT is an underlying priority for the implementation of Moldova's development and modernization agenda." "It is a fast and cost-effective tool to modernize the country and ensure greater performance in the public sector with the ultimate goal to better address the needs of Moldova's citizens. Through improvements in the ICT infrastructure the government is striving to become a pro-active player in building a better and less regulated business environment," the prime minister said.

The seminar will provide a common platform for engaged dialogue on the role of ICT in Moldova's public sector transformation agenda. It will use Singapore's successful experience in e-Government over the past 30 years and how collaboration with private sector might translate to Moldova. The event will include a series of knowledge-sharing sessions focusing on how ICT can play a strategic role in nation building, public administration, and service delivery to citizens and businesses.

The World Bank is providing technical assistance to Moldova on ICT sector policy reform, regulatory capacity building and helping to identify ways to increase the efficiency of the telecommunications sector, Victor Neagu said.
