Transforming Government since 2001
President Mohamed Nasheed has inaugurated the e-government system established by National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) since 2005.

Briefing on the system, Chief Executive of the centre Faiq Umar said communications among government authorities would be exchanged through the “Government E-letter Management System” (GEMS).

Although the US$ 3.36 million (Rf43.1 million) worth system developed by ST Electronics Info Com Systems (STE-ICS) of Singapore would be initially available to Male, Seenu Atoll and Fuvahmulah, it would be expanded to all parts of Maldives in the future, Deputy Minister of Communication Mohamed Fayaz, who was recently transferred from Deputy Commissioner of Police’s post, said.

Fayaz stressed that many services would be introduced under the system in the future.

Speaking in the ceremony, President Mohamed Nasheed noted utilising modern technological resources to carry out administrative works and finding more ways to cut down on government expenditure were among the main aims of the current government.

“I have noticed that many resources, especially human resources have been established to a greater extent in Police Headquarters. One notable figure is Fayaz [former Deputy Commissioner of Police]. My belief was that he would be able to assist us in this [implementing the e-government system], as he pursued higher education in this field,” he said.

“We are able to successfully complete this project by employing the punctuality and other good habits of the Police.”

The government has been spending more than Rf50 million per annum for stationeries used by government authorities, President Nasheed emphasised.

“That is the amount we spend to buy stationeries such as pencils and papers. I am not saying that we will be able to cut down this amount fully today. But I am not doubtful that this system would assist in implementing government’s policy of reducing the expenditure,” he added.
