The Principal Secretary, Mr. Benjamin Choppy, who is responsible for the Department of ICT (DICT) under which the e-Government portfolio falls, said that it is an honor and privilege for the work of DICT to be internationally recognized by the UN and the Commonwealth. “Especially when it is an all Seychellois team of whom many are still in their youth," he said.
The case study initiative was launched following a presentation at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, UK, on November 19, 2012 by the government of Seychelles on its e-Government strategies to improve connectivity, transform government processes for efficiency gains, and deliver e-services. The Director General of the Information Technology of Department of ICT (DICT), Mrs. Lanka Dorby, made the presentation at the conference on “e-Governance in Small States.”
The event was attended by representatives from Microsoft, the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO), the Commonwealth Network of IT for Development (COMNET-IT), the government of Malta, and high commissioners from 30 Commonwealth small states to discuss how ICT could be used to facilitate improvements in public financial management, anti-corruption, and service delivery.
Seychelles is making great strides in ICT development, and this is reflected in its top ranking in Africa in the United Nations Public Administration Network's (UNPAN) e-Government Index (2012) and the International Telecommunications Union's (ITU) ICT Development Index (2012).
Further development in ICT can be anticipated now that Seychelles is linked to a submarine fiber-optic cable.
