The absence of a UK presence on a new EU website designed to make cross-border business easier within Europe, means Wales could be losing out on much need inward investment.

That is the claim of Labour Welsh Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths.

She says she is angered at the fact that the entire UK is "missing" from the new Your Europe - Business portal, which is set-up to give EU entrepreneurs easy access to information on doing business in other EU member states.

Launched on March 26, site site answers questions about legal requirements, possibilities and constraints of doing business in each EU member state and at EU level.

It helps small and medium sized firms to take advantage of opportunities to trade and offer their services within the single market.

The site also offers direct access to e-government services, such as VAT refund procedures, and online administrative procedures in the EU member states.

But while the site gives Welsh companies information on how to sell good and services in Europe and how to benefit from public contracts in other EU countries, it does not give entrepreneurs from those countries information about setting up a business in Wales.

According to Ms Griffiths, this omission could be costing Wales dearly.

She said: "At a time when Wales should be doing all it can to attract inward investment to create much needed jobs, it is unbelievable that the UK is missing from this website at its much publicised launch. We are the only country in the EU without a presence there.

"Even the most cursory glance at this website gives you an idea of just how useful it is in making cross-border business easier within the European Union."
