Transforming Government since 2001
A deal with high street retailers, a money-saving travel initiative and an eSourcing service are three of the new tools to help the public sector buy smarter to be showcased at the government's official procurement conference and exhibition on 21 and 22 June.

'Procurement Solutions 2005', hosted by www.ogcbuyingsolutions.gov.uk, aims to help public sector bodies deliver better public services and achieve the £7bn of savings from smarter procurement, contributing to the £21.5bn overall efficiency gains by 2007/8 as laid out in the Gershon report. The free event is being held in partnership with the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) and will take place at Earls Court One.

Hugh Barrett, Chief Executive of OGCbuying.solutions said: "Public sector purchasers are facing real challenges today. They need to continue to deliver better services but do so more efficiently. That's why we have chosen to focus on these issues at our annual event.

"We will be showcasing several exciting new initiatives at 'Procurement Solutions' this year including our Travel Services project, a framework agreement for purchases from High Street stores and our eSourcing service."

These three innovative time and cost-saving initiatives are explained in more detail below:

  • Travel Services Initiative - 'on track' to be launched in early next year, offering the public sector a selection of travel arrangements from car hire to air and rail travel. This initiative is targeted to produce savings of 10 per cent on public sector travel by using aggregated spend, common travel policies, IT-enabled travel buying and promoting best practice.

  • eSourcing - an innovative web-based tool available now. There are four services - eTendering, eEvaluation, eCollaboration and eContract Management - which can be acquired separately or together for public sector purchasers to buy goods and services over the internet.

  • Retail Trade Framework - has been set up in collaboration with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). This is a series of framework agreements with major high street retailers that provide quick and easy access to a wide range of products and services, offering a clear audit trail and excellent value for money (VFM).
