Open data a part of plan to become a digital economy.

Thailand’s ICT Ministry will propose to the Parliament that free access to government data be made a constitutional right of citizens, a senior official said.

The ministry plans to submit the proposal within a month, said Sak Segkhoonthod, Chief Executive of the ministry’s E-Government Agency.

The move would give businesses access to more data to create new services and innovate, he said, according to local media, and increase the government’s transparency and efficiency.

While some agencies already share data with the public, citizens must pay a fee to access many valuable datasets.

Open data will be one of the 10 areas under the government’s plan to make Thailand a digital economy, Segkhoonthod said, which include digitising public services and providing citizens internet access.
