The plan is to connect businesses and homes across Australia with a “super-fast broadband network”, in a project spanning ten years.
“Current target is to complete all 10 network facilities centres by mid-2012,” explained Russell Perry, Director, Marketing & Customer Insight, Emerson Network Power, the company that has been awarded the contract.
According to Perry, the three key areas of focus for the coming year are: rapid roll-out of network facilities centres, ultra-high availability, and optimised energy efficiency.
The contract is a part of Australia’s long-term vision to provide high-speed connectivity to the nation: a task made challenging by its vast and varied landscape and low population density.
The NBN Co has released a 12-month fibre rollout schedule and the precise locations across the country that will be involved in the construction. While some parts of Australia already have fibre optic connectivity, “the schedule includes 28 newly-released sites across the country as well as extensions to existing fibre footprints,” according to the NBN website.
The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, declared on 18th of October: “Over the next year, NBN Co will have commenced construction of a high-speed fibre broadband network to a further 485,100 homes across Australia. All Australians deserve the benefits that will be delivered by our world class NBN.” 81,700 premises are already connected to theNBN or are undergoing connectivity construction.
“The NBN deployment project is the largest in Australian history,” commented Perry.
