National ICT Australia (NICTA) has launched a data analytics lab this week in collaboration with RMIT University.

Professor Mark Sanderson, Deputy Head Researcher of the Computer Science and Information Technology of RMIT University told FutureGov that the lab will improve how information is transmitted and analysed in transport and healthcare systems. “It might be that you have sensors that are telling you on how your roads are being used, or the number of passengers that you have on a train, or just the way that people are accessing your website. All of these different blocks of information about people and the way that people are using services gives you opportunities to optimise those services.”

Sanderson also said that data analytics can help people to understand whether there is a need to get an engineers deployed to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, for instance. “Currently, they have to send people to go and manually inspect the bridge on a regular basis and they’re trying to see if the sensors will give them an ability to understand whether the bridge needs mechanical attention.”

Other uses he cited were how sensors can be used to detect the flow of passengers in public transport. “Once you’ve built up this sort of idea about how people are using the service you can start to simulate ways in which the service might be changed to make it work better.”

Hospitals with extensive electronic records in the database can also benefit by ensuring that treatment is delivered more effectively. “Potentially there are all sorts of opportunities to learn about why people get particular illnesses, what sort of conditions, what might be the precursors to somebody developing a particular condition,” he said.

The university is also currently working with Siemens on green buildings. The project is looking at how sensors can be deployed in buildings to control the temperature of the surroundings. Analytics can help in providing data on how to direct heat or air-conditioning to areas that are more crowded.
