Ahead of the 5G auctions, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today initiated pilots of 5G readiness across various locations in India. TRAI used 5G small cells in street furniture in Bhopal Smart City, GMR International Airport New Delhi, Deendayal Port Kandla & Namma Metro Bengaluru.

TRAI used street furniture like a traffic signal pole, street light pole, smart pole, billboard, direction board, road signage, footover bridge and a city bus shelter for small cells and also deployed aerial fibre.

In Bhopal Smart City, the project was carried out at 11 locations. Smart City Bhopal has become the first smart city in the country to test 5G readiness for use of street furniture.

Similarly, Deendayal Port Kandla and GMR International Airport New Delhi have become the first port and airport to test 5G readiness.

MG Road Metro station was selected as the main station in the Nama Metro Bengaluru network to target 5G coverage. The 5G coverage was tested at road level, in its Concourse area, platform and tracks on both sides. Namma Metro has become the first Metro rail system in India to test 5G readiness.

Telecom companies Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafoneldea, and BSNL are participating in these pilots at different locations.

TRAI feels that these pilots will be helpful to make cross-sectoral infrastructure more accessible for a quick roll-out of the 5G networks for Telcos, post allotment.

Small cells are low-powered radio access nodes that. have a coverage range from a few meters up to a few hundred meters. The radio & antenna are compressed & portable for easy deployment.

Experts say that the higher frequency 5G bands will have shorter coverage as signals in these bands cannot travel through buildings or obstacles.

It is anticipated that deployment of small cells can play a prominent role in the 5G network rollout & for telcos, small cells will be economically feasible to expand the network.
