Dubai Municipality has announced the launch of a Centralized Statistical Information System in the Emirate of Dubai that seeks to provide mechanisms for ensuring data flow and analyzing statistical data electronically.

The move forms part of Dubai's e-Government initiative. This was announced in a press conference on Tuesday by Hussein Nasser Lootah, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Planning and Building Affairs. The press conference was also attended by Arif Al Muhairi, Director of the Statistics Centre at Dubai Municipality, who also chairs the Administrative Committee of the center, Saeed Ibrahim, Head of Automation and Databases Section, and Hassan Mashmooshi, Head of the Automation Unit.

Explaining details of the system, Al Muhairi said the fast growth of the emirate necessitates providing updated statistical data on all economic, commercial, social and cultural sectors of the emirate.

'One of our top priorities in this regard was setting up a comprehensive centralized electronic system. We should also develop sources of statistical data such as more and more in-depth surveys and statistical studies,' he said.

Saeed Ibrahim said the new system would provide mechanisms for ensuring data flow from various sources electronically thereby ensuring accuracy, comprehensiveness and constant updating of the data. Also, the system would allow analyzing statistical data electronically in a direct manner from different databases. In implementing the system, state-of-the-art technologies will be applied and for this, a specialised international firm will assist the Municipality. The company will provide an effective system thereby saving time and efforts in providing data and ensuring regular and updated flow of information.

'Moreover, this will also result in a decentralization of issuance of statistical data thanks to the automatic flow of data from its sources such as statistical surveys and studies undertaken by the center on a regular basis,' Ibrahim said. He noted that the first phase of the project, which began on 2 January 2005, would include analytical studies of the system's technical and technological requirements.

Explaining the technical aspects of the system, Hassan Mashmooshi said the system would include mechanisms for collecting data from different sources, methods for processing statistical data and information, tools for issuing reports and flow-charts, and tools for helping decision-making and forming future vision.
